Inflammation's Impact on Your Health

Inflammation in your body has two sides. One is acute and fights infections. If you've ever poked your finger on the thorns of a rose bush, you've likely seen redness and swelling. But chronic inflammation occurs from unwanted toxins in the body. When you eat fatty foods and drink lots of sodas, alcohol, or even sugary drinks for kids then you can see the result, especially men with fat cells developing around the stomach area.

A chronic condition can lead to various cancers and conditions like rheumatoid arthritis. This is why a lifestyle change in what you eat and how you exercise will boost your quality of life.

Inflammation and Upper Cervical Care in Los Angeles

Your brain sends healing signals throughout your body and they're channeled through an area called the brainstem, located at the base of your neck. Think of this important area like a dimmer switch for a light. When the nerves are working well, they can control the pain that comes from inflammation just like you can adjust the switch for the proper amount of light in a room.

But when there's interference at the brainstem level, then the pain sensations can amplify and your body isn't able to easily fight infection. Interference can happen from the vertebrae pinching the nerves, a condition that can happen suddenly from a major traumatic event or gradually from something you don't notice, like poor posture.

An Upper Cervical adjustment removes interference at the brainstem level by aligning the vertebrae that protect the area. I use 3D X-rays to pinpoint areas of misalignment, and then use a gentle approach with just my fingers to align the bones.

Inflammation and Your Lifestyle

Once you're aligned, there are other strategies for reducing chronic inflammation.

Eating well, exercising, and resting are all pathways to optimal health.

Imagine if your brain is freely sending healing signals through the brainstem and you're eating the right kinds of vegetables and proteins. Your digestion will improve and you'll enjoy an advantage with food that has appropriate calories, is low in refined carbohydrates and high in soluble fiber.

An article on Nutrition.org says a Mediterranean diet that incorporates olive oil, fish, modest lean meat consumption, fruits and vegetables, legumes, and whole grains is a good plan. It's high in mono-unsaturated fatty acids, has a higher omega-3 to omega-6 ratio and will help reduce the effects of chronic inflammation.

Exercising is important as well. Research from the Integrative Health and Mind-Body Biomarker Lab at the University of California San Diego shows that 20 minutes of brisk walking can produce an anti-inflammatory response. "Each time we exercise, it seems that we are doing something good for our body at the cellular level," says senior author Suzi Hong, PhD, associate director. Every workout truly does count.

If you want peak performance, then relaxation and sleep are also key. Sleep interruptions can lead to chronic inflammation, as studied by Dr. Mark R. Zielinski, researcher at VA Boston Healthcare System who wrote an article, Inflammation and Sleep-Intimate Partners in Health and Functioning. Small proteins called cytokines allow cells including brain cells to communicate with each other and prompt inflammation. Many pro-inflammatory cytokines regulate sleep, health, and physiological functions such as cognition, mood, performance, and fatigue that are affected by sleep loss and disease. These pro-inflammatory cytokines are enhanced in the brain with sleep loss.
